Chinese martial arts classes

Shuai Jiao (Chinese wrestling) is a practical no nonsense form of Chinese martial arts with a history of some 4,000 years. It has survived ancient battles and modern wars; and today remains the martial arts of choice for the Chinese military and police force.

Shuai Jiao contains five martial arts elements: Da - kicking and striking; Shuai - wrestling and grappling; Na - joint and pressure point manipulation; Dien - point striking; and Duan - breaking and dislocation, all within the context of unbalancing and throwing the opponent.

Shuai Jiao was one of China's best kept martial arts secrets: only coming to the West in 1976; and then taught mainly in Chinese closed door schools. Today, the benefits of Shuai Jiao are available for all people of all ages and abilities. Beginner to Intermediate classes are available on Thursday evenings, from 18:30 (the formal lesson begins at 18:45) to 21:00, in the Sports Hall, CSSC, Chadwick Street, London.

For more information contact Master Instructor Rob Simpson (Shifu) on 020 7925 6067.

Dance: Modern Ballroom and Latin American

Modern Ballroom and Latin American Dance Modern Ballroom and Latin American Dance classes take place every Wednesday in the Westminster Room on the 3rd floor of the Civil Service Recreation Centre, Chadwick Street. There are two classes:

5.45pm Year 1
7.00pm Year 2 plus

(There is also an opportunity for social dance at 8.00pm and an after dance drink in the bar!)

Charles Stewart runs the classes with a very long-established Ballroom and Latin teacher and a North of England Champion of her day, Mrs Connie Riley.

There is an annual intake into year 1 via a beginners' night, for those who are new to dancing, who should email Charles to register their interest in the next induction. See our report and pictures from the very successful February 2006 beginners' night, repeated again in April 2007.

Those who have danced before can trial either of the above one hour classes for a one off no commitment fee. Payment otherwise is at a flat quarterly rate, paid in advance.

The social dance is free to all those attending the classes, to practise what they have learned during the evening and to dance together for pleasure.

"Partners - where would we be without them?" It’s ideal if you can come with a partner. If not, contact Charles and he will let you know how the classes stand in the balance of the sexes.

"What should I wear?" Normal heeled shoes are fine to start with, but avoid those with a rubber tread, as these act like a brake with the floor and impede your dancing. Any clothing that is easy to move around in is fine.
