Report
After their resounding win at Chiswick, and after hearing that
rounders was not a key sport in Barbados, the CSSC London team, “Hollys
Defra Heroes”, arrived at the world famous Wanderers cricket
ground full of optimism.
Defra were reminded of the complex “national rules”,
but the locals were somewhat confused with the many options of
whole and half rounds, forward and behind, good balls and no balls,
etc. Eventually they settled for the deal – hit and run!
After a half-hour practice game, London batted first and scored
a respectable 9 ½ points with highlight “rounds” by
Pryer, Hodson and Galvin.
However, although London had the tactical advantage, and better
eye/bat/ball coordination, they hadn’t bargained for the
opposition including four very useful cricketers (2 of them West
Indies U19), as well as the Barbados team’s triathlon champion – which
more than made up for lack of knowledge of rules and tactics. Also
the majority were left-handed, which took advantage of the right
hand field placings.
But in the end, the better all round shots prevailed, and London
won 9½ - 8½.
Results
(Based on 30 “good” balls per innings): London 9 ½ points
(6 rounds plus 7 halves); Barbados 8 ½ points (4 rounds
plus 9 halves)
