Bowling news - 2006 results

The London Civil Service Club members enjoyed an 81st season at Chiswick Sports Ground under their President, Barry Porter (Royal Mail). Despite the year by year fall in numbers generally taking up the sport, the Club’s membership was maintained at 55 members. We played 18 matches and won 12, lost 5 and drew 1. The high point of the season was probably our win against MOD. We would like to play more matches against Departmental Associations. It would be good for Civil Service bowls if they would promote them more. It is unfortunate that 5 other matches were cancelled – surprisingly, in view of the generally hot summer, 3 were rained off!

Club Championships, Nationals

25 members competed in the Club Championships in the singles, pairs, triples and fours. The under-mentioned London Champions qualified to play in the English National Championships at Leamington during August Bank Holiday week:

Singles - Tony Lea (MOD)
Pairs - Nick Skidmore (HMRC), Paul Cater (BT)
Triples - Tony Lea, Nick Skidmore, Paul Cater
Fours - Paul Fuller (DCA), Ian Streames (Royal Mail)
Andy Roberts (Royal Mail), John Riddington (LCD)

Our Champions did not do so well in the Nationals this year, although Tony Lea was a finalist in the Singles, and, Nick Skidmore and Paul Cater lost in the semi-finals of the Pairs – Consequently, London will not, for the first time in a number of years, be represented in the International Tournament which is being held in Belfast in July 2007.

Women’s Singles Championships 2006

6 women members competed in the London CSSC Women’s Singles Championships 2006 in a round robin tournament at Chiswick. The event was keenly contested throughout, each competitor playing 5 matches. A result was not achieved until a last round match between Diane Harris (DEFRA – Kew Gdns) and Marjorie Slann (MOD) when Diane Harris managed to beat her unbeaten opponent to win the Championship on shot difference. It was unfortunate that the CSSC National Championships at ROKO Portsmouth were cancelled so the London Champion could defend London’s Singles title it has won in the last 2 years running.
