Trip to Lille 2/3 September 2006

James’s smooth organisation saw the Lille trip off to a flying start, with our charming driver convincing officials to book us through on an earlier ferry, allowing us more time in France.

The weather kept fair enough to find our way through the vast variety of stalls that make up the city’s "Braderie" annual street fair, find some moules-frîtes – (mussels and chips), wallow in some serious nostalgia, or grab some of the fine international food – it was all possible in our two-day trip.

We even got to gate crash a French wedding which was taking place at our comfortable hotel, a welcome short walk from the buzz of the Braderie market and a good chance to catch up from our 5am start!

The whole group enjoyed some French cuisine in the evening, and the fine wines made the whole event go with even more joie de vivre.

The day we went to Lille
Antiques galore – what a thrill
Stalls aplenty and lots of wine
My – didn’t we have a lovely time.

The hotel was comfortable without a doubt
A wonderful coach driver drove us about
And James more than once saved the day
In helping with food and fares we had to pay.

Of course the biggest challenge of all
The excellent quiz but Civil Servants should be back in school
The scores averaged mostly one out of ten
The winners a trio of three ageing men!
