6 Mile Cross-Country Race

Snow beats the Snow!

Out of the thirty people who entered this Race twenty-two actually turned up. The threat of severe wintry weather may have deterred some of the others.

It was quite clear from the start who was favourite to win the race – Shane Snow, who had finished in 54th place in the Southern Cross-Country, out of over 1,000 athletes, he won in a good time of 33.18 minutes. Danny Rose, running on home ground, was his closest rival finishing in a time of 34.53, followed by the Luton runner Andrew Stowe in 37.27. Next home was Stephanie Robinson who finished almost a minute ahead of the first over 40, Ian Cole.

Special mention should be made of Andrew Hudson and Michael Murphy, who had entered the 2 mile race, but decided that they could manage the 6 miles, they finished in 16th and 19th places respectively; and to John Gardner who had just returned from Scotland where he was representing England in a badminton match – he finished in a creditable 11th place, with half a shoe missing.

Following the race, the athletes and officials enjoyed homemade cakes, and many of them would be home before the promised snow came down!
