Netball - 12 July 2008
Winners: Whitehall Hurricanes (Dept: Home Office)
Runners up: Heathrow (Dept: HMRC)
Report: The 2008 St Lucia Challenge had great responses for mixed netball. We had 12 entries from various departments. We anticipated rain but the weather was on our side for the whole tournament. Players’ levels were very high therefore we had some competitive games. The competition didn’t start off as smoothly as planned. The first team to go on court 1 wasn’t ready because all their players hadn’t turned up by 11am, but they quickly found a spare player to fill the place until half time.
Although we had some experienced players in the tournament there were some queries/confusion to the rules in terms of where male players could play and the ratio for males to females on court (this was clearly stated in the rules). The majority of the teams got it right first time round. A quick meeting was called with the captains and umpires and the organiser cleared up any confusion. Lesson Learned – all rules to be down in black and white and announced again and again before start of play.
Overall a good day was had by all and many commented that the event was well organised and that they enjoyed the tournament.
Volleyball - 12 July 2008
Winners: Charlie's Angels (Changed name to Alias) - Dept: HMRC
Runners up: Can’t stand thee heat (Dept: HMRC)
Report: No report – awaited
Cricket - 2 July 2008
Winners: Sparta (Dept: DfT)
Runners up: HASSRA Strollers (Dept: DWP)
Report: A blisteringly hot summer's day, saw the following nine teams contest the 2008 CSSC Cricket 6s St Lucia Challenge at Chiswick:
- Agricola
- Dragons of the Caribbean
- Feltham Garrison
- GAD
- London Strollers
- Page Street Exiles
- Sparta
- The Strollers
- TSOL
Opting for a format of 1 group of 5 and 1 group of 4, meant that a total of 16 group games were played before the semi-finalists emerged. The group games were hard fought and threw up a good number of surprise results - at the end of this phase, only one team came away without a win to their name, which says a lot for the overall standard of all the teams involved.
The semi-finals were played between The Strollers & Agricola and Sparta & TSOL. Both games were closely contested, and after a good combination of big hits and quick runs, Sparta and The Strollers won through to the final - a repeat of the 2006 competition. Batting first, Sparta posted a good but certainly getable 56-4. The Strollers reply started well, but faltered as a couple of key wickets fell. In the end, they just fell short at 50-3, but things were so close that a last ball 6 would have won it - all in all, a very competitive final.
Congratulations to Sparta, who now go on to represent CSSC London in St Lucia at the end of 2009.
Golf - 22 May 2008
